Brief Introduction
This course is based on the World Bank’s “Think Road Safety – Road Safety Training for External Partners”. The course focuses on the road safety, impacts caused by injuries and deaths, global data on mobility, and the global plan of action for safety improvement. It also looks at methods of safety implementation and examples of worldwide successful case studies.
Description
This course provides an introduction to road safety, impacts caused by injuries and deaths, global data on mobility, and the global plan of action for safety improvement. A considerable part of the course is spent on understanding the importance of road infrastructure, implementing the Safe System Approach with global instances cited, and managing additional aspects such as police enforcement. It also looks at methods of safety implementation and examples of worldwide successful case studies. Lastly, the course examines the capacity reviews and project management operations carried out by the World Bank for improving road safety.
Knowledge
- By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Explain the unacceptably high toll that road traffic injuries (RTI) and deaths incurred in nations, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where more than 90% of the road deaths and injuries occur - representing a major public health, economic and development burden.
- Describe five pillars of the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety (2011-2020), the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) target 3.6, as well as evidence-based proposals (such as speed management) are aimed at tackling this epidemic.
- Explain the effectiveness of this approach, its evolution from the traditional view (focused on human behavior and one-off interventions) to its more systematic and holistic outlook.
- Learn about the role of road safety engineering improvements, preventive strategies such as road safety impact assessments, audits, and inspection, as well as reactive strategies including black spot management and network safety management.
