Brief Introduction

Learn how a female entrepreneur from Syria is empowering refugees and women in her community

Description

This course was launched with support by and in collaboration with the International Rescue Committee (IRC) and Western Union.

Safa'a Sukkariah is a refugee living in Jordan. She fled the Syrian war in 2012 with her family.  When she arrived in Jordan, she found that her sewing and accessory-making skills were not in high demand, so she took courses in practical home repairs to learn new skills and earn an income. Due to cultural norms, women cannot invite men into their home to make repairs without another trusted man being present, so Safa'a found there was a need for skilled female plumbers.  She started her own business, helping other women by coming to their homes to make household repairs and working with local hardware vendors to advertise her business. After her initial success, she took a course through the International Rescue Committee (IRC) on financial literacy and was able to open her own office.

In this course, Safa'a shares her incredible story and teaches you how to fix a leaking and clogged sink. All of the proceeds from this course before currency exchange go to Safa'a to support her in her entrepreneurial work and empower her to help other women in her community.

The videos in this course are in Arabic with English subtitles.
