Brief Introduction

black ink and watercolor painting

Description

Hello Artists,

how are you ? I wish you the best all the time ! :)

today I'm sharing a class with you about a tiger, in watercolour and ink style.

here as usual I will share the full entire process of the painting, and also a description of all materials I've used, started from a realistic reference image of a tiger, and then inking the main details until finish it with some watercolor to make it brighter, vibrant and [ I hope] a good final illustration

are you ready to create a easy but good and vibrant illustration ?

this time I decided to start form a real reference image of a tiger, of course you can choose the animal or any other subject you like :)
I choose a tiger because of the black stripes on the body, and I think that's the main key about my choice

to ink the tiger I used a fountain pen, with a waterproof ink suitable for fountain pen [carbon ink] and this is really important because you need an 100% waterproof ink, to avoid bleeding black colours and contaminate all the final result
if you don't have a fountain pen, you can use nib pen with ink pot, but probably the best choice is to use technical pen like sakura micron pen

cold pressed watercolor paper was the surface I choose, because is quite smooth, so it make easy to work on specially with the ink
you can take a hot pressed paper as well, because is basically without texture, but I think it's little bit hard to work on.
I still prefer cold pressed or really rough paper ;)

last but not least a wash brush or mop brush.
of course any brush is suitable, but is better to take a brush can carry on a good amount of water, in fact you will se I started with a flat brush but I switched to a mop brush immediately
I used a DaVinci casaneo, is synthetic with squirrel imitation bristles

rang of colours:
keep in your mind the rainbow > yellow / orange / red / pink / purple / blue / green they really work together.
or you can choose complementary colours way, so play with color contrast

  • yellow / purple

  • magenta / green

  • cyan / orange

vibrant and bright colours can work really good with black ink ;)

so, it's time to paint :)

  1. choose a good watercolor painting paper [I recommend cold pressed]

  2. choose a good picture of a tiger [ I suggest tiger because of the black stripes can help you]

  3. take something to ink, like a technical pencil, nib pen, fountain pen but make sure is a 100% waterproof ink

  4. make a good sketch trace with a sharp pencil or a mechanical pencil

  5. ink the sketch and make more details as possible with a waterproof black ink

  6. choose a color combination , for example rainbow range or complementary colours

  7. make sure the black ink is completely dry

  8. take a smooth brush like a mop brush, and start a wet on dry technique with colours, as you like

i've just opened a project about "tiger watercolour ink project" so you can upload your projects and progress

I hope you will like that and please contact me for any question

see you soon and keep on painting ! ;)
