Description

Course description

This course provides an overview of the neuroscience of writing through a transdisciplinary lens that considers perspectives from neuroscience, psychology, linguistics, bi- and multilingualism, as well as human and machine-assisted learning. Fundamental neurolinguistic, psychological, social, and environmental factors are introduced with an emphasis on critical functions related to language construction, including at least 15 different types of thinking related to writing as measured in neuroscientific studies. Additionally, we consider factors that facilitate and roadblocks that inhibit optimization of human communication, specifically writing. These studies are applied by students who complete a semester-long research project, which is conducted in an area of personal interest. There are many factors (for example parental, genetic, environmental, interpersonal, and intrapersonal) that affect the dynamic process of language development, and specifically of writing, across the lifespan. This transdisciplinary perspective utilizes cutting edge research from neuroscience, psychology, education, linguistics, policymakers, and other interested parties to integrate evidence-based knowledge about how individuals learn to write.
